Fundraising

Fundraising activities and forms are provided on this webpage
Quote

"Not everybody wins, and certainly not everybody wins all the time. But once you get into your boat and push off, tie into your shoes and foot stretchers, then lean on the oars; you have indeed won far more than those who have never tried."

The fundraising coordinators work hard to provide events, activities, and opportunities to each and every family. We fundraise year-round because our time during the rowing season is limited. We have major fundraiser activities, such as Scrip, Basket Bingo, and Leaf Raking, along with other smaller participation events available to each rowing family. It is expected that all rowers and their families participate in as many fundraisers as possible.

Their are many opportunities during the year for rowers and their famillies to earn funds toward their fundraising obligation. Below is an outline of activities typically scheduled during the year.

Scrip (year-round activity)

The Scrip program is a great way to meet your fundraising goals. Just purchase gift cards for items you typically purchase anyway and get a percentage of the cost applied toward your fundraising requirements. Scrip allows you to purchase your groceries and other scrip from various companies. Company reimbursements vary from 2% - 28% of the amount of scrip purchased. The discount amount will be split 80/20 between the rower and the crew general fund. For example: Order a $50.00 card from a retailer that offers 5% discount. You get a card with the full $50.00 value. The discount amount is $2.50. $2.00 will go directly to the rower’s fundraising account and $.50 will go to the crew general account. These retailers include Old Navy, Macy's, Kohl’s, Border’s, Blockbuster, Starbucks, Outback, Chipotle, Wendy's, Pizza Hut, and many others. Orders are placed each week on Sunday evening, and can usually be ready for pickup by the following Wednesday or Thursday.

We use a convenient on-line ordering system for scrip. Refer to the “Scrip On-line Ordering Guide” found at the link below.

ERG-A-Thon

In order to help alleviate the pressures of fundraising and as a way to cap the winter training effort, we participate in an ERG-a-thon with Langley High School each February. The ERG-a-thon is a combined team building/fundraising effort for all WS rowers and coxswains. Basically, it is a friendly competition between Langley and West Springfield crew teams in which all rowers will ERG for 20 minutes and totals meters rowed will be divided by the number of rowers per team. The overall focus is on endurance over speed; the team with the highest average of meters-per-rower will win the “Old Wooden Seat” trophy. West Springfield won the competitions in 2005, 2006, and 2007.
From the fundraising aspect, we ask that each rower solicit a minimum of $75.00 worth of pledges for their participation in this event. This can be done by either a flat pledge or a specified amount of money for each meter rowed from relatives, friends or businesses. Any amount a rower raises will be applied directly to the fundraising obligation for that specific rower.

Car Washes

Car washes are held several times during the spring. We usually rotate between the Cardinal Forest Shell and the Kingstowne Wal-Mart. The total funds generated during that day are divided among the rowers that worked. It is also based upon number of hours a rower worked at the car wash.
