"A race is not won in the water. A race is not won on race day; instead a race is to show what you have accomplished in practice."

Sandy Run Regional Park (more commonly known as Sandy Run Rowing Facility or simply Sandy Run) run by the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority, is located on the beautiful Occoquan River. The water at this location offers opportunities for high school training and competitive rowing. It has a 1,500 meter racecourse with grandstands and spectator parking. There are three boathouses on the site. The WS Crew shells and equipment are stored in Boathouse #3. We share this boathouse with the crew teams from Langley, Robinson, Thomas Jefferson, and South County high schools.

Directions to Sandy Run

From West Springfield High School (Total distance from WSHS is 9.5 miles and takes about 15 to 20 minutes):

1. Leave the WSHS parking lot and turn right onto Rolling Road. Stay on Rolling Road as it goes through the intersection with Old Keene Mill Road. Continue on Rolling Road to the Fairfax County Parkway.
2. Go North on the Fairfax County Parkway to Lee Chapel Road.
3. Turn left onto Lee Chapel Road and continue until it intersects with Ox Road (Route 123). Turn left onto Ox Road.
4. Take Ox Road to Hampton Road. Turn right on Hampton Road. This turn is marked with a sign that points to Fountainhead Regional Park and a fire station is located on the corner of this intersection.
5. Take Hampton Road about 1/2 mile and turn left onto Van Thompson Road. This left turn will be directly after passing power lines that cross over the road.
6. Take Van Thompson Road all the way to the rowing facility. After approximately 1/4 mile, Van Thompson Road bears sharply to the left at a well-weathered barn and continues to the entrance of Sandy Run Regional Park.
7. Parking is available in the paved lot closest to the boathouses. Overflow parking (on regatta days) is on the gravel lot located on the right just after passing the Sandy Run Regional Park sign.

**There are many routes that can be taken to Sandy Run. Here is another way - the following would replace direction numbers 1 and 2 above.
1. Leave the WSHS parking lot and turn right onto Rolling Road.
2. Veer right onto Old Keene Mill Road. Continue on Old Keene Mill Road to Lee Chapel Road.
